Lib Tech Waterboard Kraftsmen Johnny Grubbs let his fins loose at the Westport Washington Cleanwater Classic making the finals.

Originally from Orcutt in Santa Barbara County, Johnny now lives in Port Angeles Washington and is part of the crew that builds and rides Lib Tech Waterboards . He was on the 5′ 8″ Bowl Series model.

Lib Tech Waterboards are handbuilt at Mervin MFG in Carlsborg Washington using a completely new environmental lamination process and environmentally friendly materials. The surfboards have their own positive smooth feel in the water and incredible durability, liveliness and pop.

Outside Magazine selected the Lib Tech Bowl Series Waterboard for their summer buyers guide, and titled the Waterboard as the surfboard ‘Best for Travel’. After rigorous performance testing, and durability testing (the Outside crew jumped up and down on the Waterboard on concrete!) the Waterboard held strong, and ripped! However, we recommend keeping Waterboards in the water, and if you want to take it to the concrete we also have skateboards!

The Lib Tech Bowl Series Waterboard has been nominated for the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) Image Award in the Surfboard of the Year category!

Lib Tech is nominated alongside Rusty, Lost, Channel Islands, and Firewire. While the other esteemed nominees are being recognized for their board shapes, the Lib Tech Waterboard is nominated for Surfboard of the Year based on shape and bringing entirely original manufacturing processes and materials to surfing. Everything the Waterboard is composed from is new to the surf industry, from the foam to the fins, everything except the fin screws. Lib Tech Waterboards have set a new standard for durability, performance, and environMENTALLY nicer materials and construction processes. “How to get better prepared for the winter than do a nice surf trip to the Mentawais for 2 weeks ? I know life’s hard but I’ve dreamt about doing a boat trip there for ever. All you have to think about is how’s gonna be your next barrel or if you want to surf a perfect left or a perfect right. There are so many waves that take different swell directions and winds that you pretty much sure to surf perfect waves everyday. Lib Tech Wake Surf Waterboards?

“This is the 5’4” ramp series, a perfect board in waist to chest high surf, or even knee high boat wake surf. I took out the center/trailer fin to reduce friction and make for a faster, looser ride behind the gutless boat wake. It worked better than any surfboard I have ever ridden behind a boat, even better than a lot of wake surf specific boards I have tried. And with it’s virtually indestructible nature (unlike traditional surfboard constructions), you can just throw it in the boat, no worries about it getting all dinged up. When you get to the ocean, throw back in the trailer fin and destroy small surf. A great summertime board!” -Blair Habenicht

Recap: Lib Tech’s Traditions – A NW Waterboard Event

July 17, 2012. Near Canada.
Lib Tech rippers took top honors at the Traditions Waterboard event held this past weekend at La Push, Washington. Out of 32 competitors in double elimination format, Lib Tech’s Jonathan Grubbs made the most of the chest high, peaky surf, whipping backside reverses and solid hacks throughout the event to pocket a cool $1,000 in cash. LeBaron Esty drew the cleanest lines and loftiest shore break punts of any competitor to take home 3rd place and $300. Much more than a contest alone, Traditions was a way to give back to the Quileute Nation, one of the tribes in Near Canada who graciously allow surfer’s access to their beautiful beaches.

Hosted by the Lib Tech Waterboarding Division and North by Northwest Surf Shop, in conjunction with the Quileute Nation, proceeds from the event, including competitor entry fees and raffle tickets, went directly to the Quileute Nation Surf Camp and raised over $1,500. Lib Tech’s ”Bags for Tickets” beach clean-up gave spectator and competitor alike the opportunity to earn a few extra raffle tickets for their efforts collecting trash from the beach. Additional funds were also raised by West End Surf Shop to extend the Forks skatepark, which thanks to generous donations will soon feature a hip off the mini ramp.

“The Lib Tech Traditions event was a classic opportunity to enjoy a day at the beach with friends from near and far,” said competitor and Lib Ripper Brain Forcum. “Great people and great vibes. Many thanks to everyone who helped make it happen and shared some waves and laughs.”

This event was the first public demo of the Lib Tech Waterboards. Most everyone who had the opportunity to demo a Waterboard had same comment—these boards are fast!

After the awards, renowned photographer and musician Scott Sullivan plugged in his amp under the demo tent on the beach and played to a crowd seated on driftwood logs and surfers still in the water who could hear his songs in the lineup.
